The Project: Build a Business Website From the Ground Up

For a college SEO course, I had to create a business and its website from nothing. I handled every step, from connecting the domain to a host to publishing content and building backlinks.

The business is a personal training service for seniors in Windsor, Ontario. Its trainers specialize in mobility for older adults.

The Challenge: A Crowded Search Term

“Personal trainer Windsor” is a tough search to win. The gyms already ranking have older websites and more backlinks, which gives them more authority with Google.

A brand-new site wasn’t going to beat them head-on.

The Strategy: Target an Underserved Niche

Most Windsor trainers split their services by gender, not age. Seniors and their families had few options built for them.

So I targeted long-tail keywords, which are longer, more specific searches like “personal trainer for elderly Windsor.” Fewer businesses compete for them, and the people searching know exactly what they want.

The Build: Pages for Every Step of the Customer Journey

Each page answers the question a visitor has at that point. Some people are just researching. Others are ready to book.

That FAQ content is what Google’s AI Overview pulled from.

Off-Page SEO: Directories and Backlinks

After launch, I listed the business in online directories and built a small backlink profile. Backlinks are links from other websites, and Google treats them like votes of trust.

Because the business wasn’t real, my options were limited. The site still ranked.

Technical SEO: Fixing Errors With Screaming Frog

Screaming Frog scans a website the way Google does. I used it to find and fix code errors, broken links and missing alt text (short image descriptions that screen readers and search engines read).

The result is a site that loads well and works for every visitor.

What This Means for Your Business

You don’t need the biggest website in town to show up on Google. A clear niche, helpful content and a clean site can beat competitors with years of head start.

Friendly Muscles did this without a Google Business Profile, one of the strongest local ranking signals. A real business with a profile and customer reviews has even more to work with.
